Just what I need. Another Collection.

From “The Old Timer’s Bulletin” Vol 33., #1: a short piece on the minor hobby of collecting and displaying antique tube BOXES.  Not the tubes, mind you, just the boxes.  Fast forward to me in 30 years…

I recently bought a huge pile of the old radio fanzines; hundreds, probably, from the family of a deceased collector, likely; and while Old Radios just aren’t ‘my thing,’ the ‘zines are great, really charming+heartfelt lil snapshots of collector-life.  The only parallel I have seen in the musical-gear world is Vintage Guitar magazine, which is eh so-so.  I have subscribed and unsubscibed to VG a few times now, it’s not bad, and the price is certainly right, but I dunno it just sorta misses the mark… maybe it’s just too dry…  Anyhow, in this era of online-everything, are there any noteable audio and/or instrument print-fanzines still in production?  Anything worth checking out?  Let us know…

  • You don't have to be into old radios as such, but about every good tech I've ever known had a decent RF background. When people come up to me and say they want to learn electronics I get them to build a regen receiver, and that sorts out those who have any potential pretty quick. After that mic pre's and guitar amps go pretty smoothly, because they can follow a schematic, they have some idea about layout and they can at least sort of solder. And it's cheap.

That said, Bob Pease never had much interest in radios...but he was an engineer. Oh boy, was he.

I read Vintage Guitar at the barber shop, my barber is a guitar hound. There's also a newsletter called "ToneQuest" he gets, but it's something like a hundred bucks a year.

  • I'm really liking the tube box museum. I just scanned a couple dozen. Let's do this. "your site or mine"?

  • haha. yea i don't think im ready yet... i've tended to throw the things out over the years. but if you wanna get something together i'll link to it! I am sure i'll follow you eventually.... c.

  • I'm looking for information on the Westinghouse RJ-563 or DRJ-564 vacuum tubes. Anyone know anything about them?
