  And LBJ was probably going to win anyway, but the drubbing Goldwater got was the end of the old line middle of the road Republicans and made Ronald Reagan inevitable. For one thing, he won in the &quot;Solid South&quot;, the solid DEMOCRATIC South, against a SOUTHERN Democrat,  which made Nixon&#039;s Southern Strategy inevitable, and will probably come back as the Sailer Strategy if Romney gets defeated. (Google it.) 

 The Dems would have been better off to win by  a little. Blowouts mean real change on the other side, and that means a whole new offensive line to deal with.  Narrow victories  leave you with the devil you know next time, more often than not.]]></description>
