The LT Sound ECC “Echo Control Center” c. 1982

LT_ECC_EchoHere’s an unusual echo + reverb device circa 1982; the LT Sound ‘Echo Control Center,’ made in Georgia (USA).  A quick search reveals that these have appeared on eBay from time to time.  Anyone using one of these?  Anything to recommend it?

Now that I’ve bought a second one, I can rave about how great this unit is. This could be in my top 5 favorite outboard units, after 30 years of recording. And I’ve been through a TON of outboard studio effects. I’m constantly buying and selling studio gear, and I keep the gems for myself.
Why no one makes a unit with an analog BBD delay feeding a spring reverb, with a filter and an analog EQ on the back end, is beyond me. It’s the perfect marriage for not only vocals, but also drums, guitars and keys . We’ve all been feeding our delays into reverbs for years anyway, but yet there are so few all in one units made to do just that.
This isn’t just a one trick pony though….the ability to use it as a mic pre (with a LOT of gain – actually 2 separate pre’s with XLR’s), or overdrive the inputs, is amazing. Plus, I have no idea what’s going on with the filter/ EQ section, but you can get these crazy nulls where only specific resonant frequencies come through. It’s not just a cut boost EQ, I have a feeling he’s using different sweepable filters. It’s hard to explain, but I can get tones from this that I can’t get with any other piece. I’d have to patch in a preamp, into a BBD delay, into a spring verb, into a variable filter (maybe a comb filter of some sort?) then into a 3 band EQ on the back end. BTW, the EQ is no slouch either….really great sweetener, tuned for, I assume originally , vocal frequencies.
Once you dig in and play with it, you can see how adjustable it is. Delay or verb or both, or just the pre into the filter and EQ. When it’s both verb and delay together, the verb is delayed by how long the delay time is set. Sounds great as a doubler when short, and gets very plate like when you increase the verb length. Since the length of both the delay and verb is adjustable, when it oscillates, it’s a beautiful this for bizarre textures.
I have one of these permanently patched into an aux send, and use it not only for vox, but for really unique sounds for synths, guitars, percussion etc. You won’t have any other piece that sounds quite like this thing, it’s pretty unique. A short delay into that crazy filter is just so cool, trust me.
Like I mentioned, now that I’ve gotten a second unit I can rave about it. If you’re an analog reverb, analog delay fanatic like I am, you will LOVE this box.
Seriously, someone needs to copy this thing and re-release it. It’s an amazing piece.
